Course Description: The theory and practice of humanitarianism continuously evolves in response to changes in the international political and economic environment and ongoing evaluation of humanitarian efforts. This course explores humanitarian affairs throughout the past century as a base for evaluating recent developments that will play a vital role in shaping humanitarian action in the future. High-level representatives from the political, international, military, religious, medical, legal and academic sectors contribute to lectures and discussions. Students discuss and develop strategies for responding to and mitigating complex emergencies. Topics range from current trends to current crises.

Methods and tools employed include class facilitation and interactive presentations by experienced humanitarian aid workers and Fordham academic faculty, as well as scenario exercises, group work, and discussions. This course establishes a theoretical foundation for students through lecture and employs practical application through case studies and participant case study presentations. Students will be assessed on active participation in class and all group work assignments, timely attendance of all sessions, and submission of original work.

Cost: There is a course fee of $1,600 and students will earn three credit hours upon completion. This course can be taken independently or as part of the MIHA, Fordham University’s Master of Arts in Humanitarian Action. For those who do not wish to receive formal academic credit, the cost is $913 USD. Students who choose not to take the course for academic will receive a certificate of attendance for the program.
